The development of the Cape Winelands Airport in the Western Cape is currently on track. This multibillion-rand initiative, valued at R8 billion, involves the construction of a new airport facility scheduled to open its doors in 2028. The development spans a massive 450-hectare precinct.

Key Partners and Roles

The project is a collaborative effort involving several major industry players:

  • Development & Operation: The airport is being developed by the Cape Winelands Airport entity. They are working alongside RSA Aero, a privately owned airport operator.
  • Property & Asset Partner: Growthpoint Properties, Africa’s largest listed landlord, has come on board as a key property and asset partner. Growthpoint has secured rights to co-invest in the precinct and will specifically manage the commercial and hospitality aspects of the development.
  • Construction: The construction stalwart WBHO has been appointed to handle the physical building of the airport.

Planned Infrastructure and Facilities

According to the development plans, the airport precinct will feature comprehensive aviation and commercial facilities, including:

  • Terminals: Dedicated Passenger, Cargo, and Anchor Airline terminals.
  • Aviation Support: General Aviation areas, a runway, and facilities for MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) & Fuel.
  • Commercial & Hospitality: A Plaza and Hotel, alongside other commercial developments.

Note: Growthpoint aims for operations to commence by 2028.
